Plenty of articles have been written that assert one of the main benefits that broadband delivers is the ability to impact economic development. However, are we getting the complete picture of what it takes to achieve this goal?
I don’t think we are. The absence of key details impedes communities’ attempts to generate economic outcomes.
Economists, the FCC, a parade of private-sector companies and industry trade associations are frequently cited — along with all sorts of numbers that claim to prove the economic value of broadband.
But one source it seems you don’t see enough is economic development professionals, the people who work day in and day out to save, maintain and grow local economies...

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack granted almost $40 million in loans for projects in Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, Montana, and Oklahoma for Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) projects under the USDA’s broadband loan programs. Sprint Invests More Than $58 Million to Prepare its Georgia Networks for the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season… During Hurricane Preparedness Week and the days leading up to the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane season and the Sprint Emergency Response Team (ERT) are ensuring customers of their dedicated preparedness for the 12 to 18 tropical storm systems the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently projected for the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane season. In the San Francisco Bay Area, Motorola won a $50.6 million federal broadband stimulus grant to build a 193-site, public-safety LTE network in the region, but the proposed project has been the subject of considerable scrutiny regarding the procurement process, the readiness of chosen sites, spectrum rights and long-term costs for participating entities. FCC to shift subsidies for rural phone service to broadband. Rural telephone companies say the federal government is going to disconnect them — permanently. The Federal Communications Commission plans this summer to begin the conversion of subsidies that now support rural telephone service to support rural broadband service…. Internet's GDP Contribution Greater Than Energy,
Agriculture, Mining: Study
The Internet is causing economic growth across the world that exceeds the pace of the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s. According to a new report by McKinsey, Internet use has created GDP growth of 3.4 percent in 13 surveyed countries (Sweden, Germany, France, U.K., U.S., South Korea, Canada, Italy, Japan, India, China, Brazil and Russia) which account for over 70 percent of the global GDP.
In "mature" countries--which exclude India, China, Brazil and Russia--the Internet accounts for 21 percent growth. Though it has eliminated 500,000 jobs, it has created 1.2 million new jobs, meaning that 2.4 jobs were created for each job lost.
"Many have compared the dawn of the Internet to another communications game changer, the introduction of the Gutenberg press five centuries earlier," the report said. "But a comparison with the development and commercialization of electric power may be more appropriate."...

State of Georgia Interactive Map Tool
In addition to the National Broadband Map, GTA has made available an interactive map tool that shows additional detail. This map aggregates service into wireless and wireline coverage for any address you enter and shows that coverage over any area you zoom to.
National Broadband Map Published
The National Broadband Map is now live at www.broadbandmap.gov. The tool provides a way to search, analyze, and map broadband availability across the United States. Just enter an address to get started. Created and maintained by the NTIA at the US Department of Commerce with the FCC and in partnership with 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia.
